Marcus
Hale
A former wildlife biologist who spent a decade studying riparian ecosystems before ever turning a profit on them.
The Science
of the River
Est. 2017 — Kenton, OK
Marcus Hale didn't start as a guide. For twelve years, he worked for the state and various private conservancies as a wildlife biologist, focusing specifically on riparian habitat restoration in the high plains. His job was to gauge the health of watersheds that most people didn't know existed.
During a routine survey of the Cimarron and its spring-fed tributaries, he documented reproducing populations of wild brown trout in water that was theoretically too far south, and too arid, to support them.
"It was an accident of geology. An ancient aquifer pushing massive volumes of alkaline water 48 degrees year-round, right through the sandstone."
After a decade of public sector science, Marcus began acquiring private leases from generational landowners he had befriended during his field work. In 2017, Cimarron Drift Co. was established.
Unlike volume-focused guide outfits, Marcus operates the business like a biological survey: carefully, deliberately, and with minimal impact. He limits the calendar to just four guided days per week. This isn't an artificial marketing tactic; it's a strict requirement for preserving an incredibly fragile, overlooked ecosystem.
When he's not rowing or wading with clients, he's quietly maintaining the banks, monitoring insect density, and keeping the water exactly as he found it.

UNDERSTAND
The Philosophy
"We are here to understand the ecosystem, not to exploit it. When you respect the water, the fishing takes care of itself.
